Free online stopwatch with laps

Use this browser stopwatch for workouts, study sessions, experiments, games, practice drills, presentations and any activity where you need elapsed time. Record individual lap durations while keeping the total split time for each lap.

Lap timer Record each lap separately while the main stopwatch keeps running.
Split times See the total elapsed time at the moment each lap was recorded.
Millisecond display The stopwatch displays elapsed time in milliseconds; actual timing accuracy depends on your device and browser.
Accurate background timing Elapsed time is calculated from timestamps instead of relying on animation frames alone, so switching browser tabs does not stop the clock.

How to use the online stopwatch

  1. Press Start or the Space key to begin timing.
  2. Press Lap or the L key whenever you want to record a lap.
  3. Press Pause or Space to pause the stopwatch.
  4. Press Resume to continue from the paused time.
  5. Use Copy Results to copy recorded lap and split times.
  6. Press Reset or R to clear the stopwatch and start over.

How to time running laps with an online stopwatch

Use the lap timer for track running, walking circuits or interval practice. Press Start at the beginning of your session, then press Lap each time you finish a circuit. The stopwatch continues running while it records each lap's duration and the total elapsed time (split time).

For example, a three-lap run might look like this:

LapLap timeSplit time
Lap 101:4501:45
Lap 201:4003:25
Lap 301:5005:15

In this example, Lap 2 is the fastest at 1 minute 40 seconds. The final split shows the total time for all three laps: 5 minutes 15 seconds. After your session, use Copy Results to save your recorded lap and split times. Actual timing accuracy depends on your device and browser.

Online Stopwatch FAQ

Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. The displayed clock may refresh less often while a browser tab is in the background, but elapsed time is calculated from timestamps. When you return, the stopwatch updates to the correct elapsed time.

What is the difference between lap time and split time?

Lap time is the duration since the previous lap. Split time is the total elapsed stopwatch time when that lap was recorded.

Can I copy my lap results?

Yes. After recording at least one lap, use Copy Results to copy the lap number, lap duration and split time.

Is this stopwatch free?

Yes. The stopwatch is free to use and does not require an account.

How accurate is the online stopwatch?

Elapsed time is calculated from timestamps rather than counting animation frames, so switching tabs does not stop the stopwatch. The displayed milliseconds are intended for practical timing and should not be treated as laboratory-grade precision; actual timing behavior depends on your device and browser.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The interface is responsive and works in modern desktop and mobile browsers.
