How to Check KDP Image Size and 300 DPI

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. Select your intended Amazon KDP paperback trim size.
  3. Choose portrait or landscape orientation.
  4. Select No Bleed or Full Bleed.
  5. Click Check KDP Image.
  6. Review the required pixels, effective DPI and aspect-ratio result.

Why effective DPI matters for KDP

Amazon KDP recommends images at 300 DPI for print quality. Effective DPI depends on the image’s actual pixel dimensions and the physical size at which it will be printed, so an image can contain 300 DPI metadata and still be too small for the selected trim size.

For example, a 2550 × 3300 pixel image used at 8.5 × 11 inches has an effective resolution of 300 DPI in both directions. Enlarging the same image beyond that print size lowers its effective DPI even if the file's metadata says 300 DPI.

KDP no-bleed and full-bleed image dimensions

For Amazon KDP paperback interiors, a no-bleed page matches the selected trim size. A full-bleed page extends beyond the trim edge, so the required canvas must be larger. This checker automatically calculates the correct page dimensions and required pixels at 300 DPI for both options.

8.5 × 11 in · No Bleed 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI.
8.5 × 11 in · Full Bleed 8.625 × 11.25 inches, requiring approximately 2588 × 3375 pixels at 300 DPI.
6 × 9 in · No Bleed 1800 × 2700 pixels at 300 DPI.
6 × 9 in · Full Bleed 6.125 × 9.25 inches, requiring approximately 1838 × 2775 pixels at 300 DPI.

How many pixels do I need for a KDP paperback image?

Multiply the intended print width and height in inches by 300 to estimate the pixel dimensions for a full-page image at 300 DPI. For example, an 8.5 × 11 inch no-bleed page corresponds to 2550 × 3300 pixels. If you select full bleed, the page canvas is larger, so it needs more pixels.

This calculator checks an image as though it fills the selected interior page. If your illustration occupies only part of a page, calculate effective DPI using its actual printed size instead. A cover uses different layout requirements, including the spine and wraparound areas; use KDP's cover templates for the complete cover.

KDP Image Size & DPI Checker FAQ

Does Amazon KDP require 300 DPI images?

Amazon KDP recommends images at 300 DPI for print quality. This checker measures effective DPI using the image’s actual pixel dimensions and your selected print size.

How is effective DPI calculated?

Divide the image pixel dimension by the physical print dimension in inches. A 2550-pixel-wide image printed 8.5 inches wide has an effective horizontal resolution of 300 DPI.

What image size do I need for an 8.5 × 11 KDP page at 300 DPI?

For an 8.5 × 11 inch no-bleed page, 2550 × 3300 pixels equals 300 DPI. Full-bleed pages need a larger canvas because the artwork extends beyond the trim edge.

What size is an 8.5 × 11 KDP full-bleed page?

KDP's current guidance makes the manuscript page 8.625 × 11.25 inches for an 8.5 × 11 inch full-bleed trim size.

Does this checker read the DPI metadata stored inside my image?

The pass/fail calculation is based on actual image pixels divided by the intended print dimensions. This avoids relying on editable metadata alone.

Does a PASS mean Amazon KDP will approve my book?

No. The result only checks the image specifications evaluated by this tool. Amazon may evaluate many other manuscript, cover and publishing requirements.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The image check runs locally in your browser.
